Gutters & bird stops

Decks & underfloor
Embers pool under decks. Clear the storage, screen the perimeter, and consider noncombustible skirting where decks face open space.

Santa Clarita's fire problem is a wind problem. The Tick Fire jumped Highway 14 in 2019; the Sand Fire's plume dropped ember cast across Sand Canyon in 110-degree July heat in 2016. Both were ember events before they were flame events.
LACoFD's existing defensible space inspections already touch thousands of valley parcels each year, and the city's Emergency Management division runs preparedness outreach, alerts, and evacuation planning. Hardening is the piece only the homeowner controls.

Ember-resistant vents. Embers entering attic and crawlspace vents ignite homes from the inside, hours after the front passes. Retrofitting with 1/8-inch metal mesh or listed ember-resistant vents is the highest-value hardening move on the list.
Is home hardening required by Zone Zero?
Zone 0 regulates the first 5 feet outside your walls; most hardening upgrades beyond that are best practice rather than mandate. The exception is new construction and rebuilds, which already build to Chapter 7A. Insurers, though, increasingly ask about both.
Can hardening help with my insurance?
Often, yes. California's Safer from Wildfires framework recognizes specific hardening steps, and carriers writing in the Santa Clarita Valley may offer discounts or simply stay willing to renew. Document your work with photos and receipts.
Does a wind-driven fire like the Tick Fire change the priorities?
